Live Review: The Story So Far @ The 1865 Southampton, UK

In a fit of fist thrusts and “hell ya”s, The Story So Far provide a fantastic night of punk to Southampton venue The 1865. Following support from alternative rockers Drug Church and hardcore punk band Turnstile, The Story So Far bring their controlled but strong voiced punk emotions to the small living room-esque stage before a sold out crowd.

The Californians are quite subdued tonight compared to previous shows in the past few years where the band has been seen jumping into in the middle of the crowd while playing. It’s a straightforward performance, nothing too lavish or over the top. Frontman Parker Cannon claps along with the crowd at the end of each song but stays privy to his spot behind the microphone, rarely straying too far. It’s a far cry from Turnstile’s preceding performance, their singer two foot jumping back and forth between the crowd and the stage, but the moshing circle pit in the middle of the crowd seems to think nothing of the headliner’s choice.

Having only just released their newest self-titled record this past May, The Story So Far strangely choose to only play a handful of songs from it, including their single, ‘Nerve’ and upbeat track, ‘Solo’. They instead stick to the older classics like ‘Quicksand’ and ‘Empty Space’, and also play ‘Framework’ which Cannon comments, “one we don’t usually play live.” They slow it down half way through the set for a beautifully blue-lit rendition of their emotional ballad ‘Clairvoyant’.

“That’s the first time everyone’s been quiet at the end [of Clairvoyant],” Cannon laughs, speaking about the last guitar notes of the song no one ever quite gets to hear. “Thanks for letting him play his part.”

The Story So Far finish off their set with the popular track ‘Roam’, faking an ending until Cannon comes back with, “This is too much fun, do you mind one more?” and jumps into the actual final song, ‘High Regard’.

The vocals and instrumental during the entire show are fantastic – giving a great intimate live sound that could be comparable to any one of their recorded tracks. The band’s not winning any awards for outlandish or elaborate show tonight, but they came out to give a spot on performance and they did just that.
