Single Review: Tides of Man – ‘A Faint Illusion’ (Acoustic)

American vocalist Tilian Pearson, known simply as Tilian whilst working on solo material, has modified one of his prior band’s most popular songs into a haunting acoustic – drawing out the intensity of the lyrics and the beauty of a simple melody. Though soft compared to his current post-hardcore project with Dance Gavin Dance, this track is strong in its own right through depth of passion and potency of expression.

The evocative a cappella is supported simply with subtle guitar and a bright piano, played by former Tides of Man band mate Spencer Bradham, which drops out from time to time to showcase the raw high-pitched vocals. A haunting tone is brought to the piece with minor progressions and key changes, showcasing the heartbreaking yet yearning lyrics. The vocals grow in intensity as the track goes on, exhibiting a musical push through a layered sound.
