Taking Back Sunday Vs. Brand New Feud Rekindled

The longstanding feud between Taking Back Sunday and Brand New was once again refueled when TBS frontman Adam Lazzara called BN singer Jesse Lacey a “dick” and “not a good person” in a recent interview with O.C. Weekly.

During the interview, Lazzara was asked about playing a song like ‘There’s No ‘I’ In Team,’ which refers directly to the feud with former TBS bassist Lacey.

"I think Jesse Lacey is just a dick," Lazzara stated. "He just sucks. He's not a good person.”

“Who am I to say?”, he went on. “There's somebody out there that's gonna say I'm not a good person. I don't know."

The feud began around the year 2000, while Lacey was still Taking Back Sunday’s bassist and longtime friends with TBS guitarist and songwriter John Nolan. Allegedly, Nolan hooked up with Lacey’s then-girlfriend during a house party prompting Lacey’s departure from the band. While Lacey went on to form Brand New, Lazzara replaced him in Taking Back Sunday, originally playing bass before switching to lead vocals.

The bands went on writing scornful songs about one another including Brand New’s ‘Seventy Times Seven’ in which Lacey writes to Nolan, “So don't apologize/I hope you choke and die/Search your cell for something with which to hang yourself.” Taking Back Sunday directly replied to that song with ‘There’s No ‘I’ In Team’, the lyrics stating, “Best friends means I pulled the trigger/Best friends means you get what you deserve.” TBS even goes so far as to directly input lyrics into their song from ‘Seventy Times Seven’.

Although through the years the bands have made-up, even going so far as to tour together and play a mash-up of ‘Seventy Times Seven/There’s No ‘I’ In Team’, the members have had rough ups and downs in their relationship.
