New Ghostbusters Film Confirmed
Paul Feig has confirmed that there will be a new Ghostbusters movie, starring women.
Feig, director of both Bridesmaids and The Heat, confirmed the new movie via tweet on Wednesday afternoon. His tweet stated, “It's official. I'm making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call.”
After director Ivan Reitman backed out of making the new film, Feig stepped up to the plate to take on the challenge. Katie Dippold, writer of The Heat, was mentioned in Feig’s tweet. She will be writing the script, once again partnering up with Feig for a comedy.
The original Ghostbusters was released in 1984 and starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis. When asked about the new movie, Murray told The Toronto Star his ideal cast would be Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini, and Emma Stone. Feig explained to Entertainment Weekly that there is a lot of speculation about the female lead roles, but nothing is yet set in stone. He said he would be very open to cameos from the original cast.
The new movie will be a reboot of the original and not a remake. Feig stated to Entertainment Weekly, “My favorite thing to do is work with funny women. I was like, what if it was an all female cast? If they were all women? Suddenly, my mind kind of exploded: that would be really fun.“ A rough storyline for the film has been outlined and will soon begin production. Feig announced that the new movie will be in the same world as the original, but it will be as if Ghostbusters had never existed before. He explained to Entertainment Weekly that he hopes the fans will like the new film. “It’s a world that they’ve experienced before in the old ones, but the hope is the minute they sit down they’ll go, “I love the old one, oh my god, I’m loving this new one.””
